Our experience

Getting started with Guardio was straightforward. Right after installation, the extension walked us through its main features and explained how to turn on the key protections.

We liked that the dashboard included a simple setup checklist instead of leaving us to figure things out on our own. Once setup was complete, the overview page became a central place to review any threats or alerts Guardio detected.

After setup, we explored the dashboard tabs to review breach alerts, suspicious extensions, and email-related warnings. The layout made it easy to see what Guardio monitors and where to go when it flags a problem.

One of the biggest things to understand is that Guardio is not trying to be a traditional antivirus suite. It doesn’t include a firewall or device scanning tools, so if you want deep system-level protection, you’ll need another security product alongside it. When we contacted support, the company confirmed that Guardio relies on real-time protection instead of manual scans.

Where Guardio stands out is identity protection. Depending on your plan, it can monitor exposed personal details, alert you to breaches, and include up to $1 million in identity theft insurance.

Overall, Guardio is best for people who want browser-focused protection and are comfortable pairing it with a top antivirus program for fuller coverage.

Guardio’s feature set centers on browser-based threats. It offers real-time protection against phishing attempts, scam pages, malicious push notifications, and risky browser extensions.

Both free and paid plans include a historical data leak report that can help you spot past exposures linked to your accounts. If you find one, changing affected passwords quickly is an important step to prevent identity theft. 

Paid plans also include data breach monitoring, which can alert you when newly discovered breaches expose your personal information.

Malware and antivirus scan

Guardio does not offer traditional antivirus scans. Instead, it focuses on real-time browser protection, aiming to block threats as you browse rather than scan your device for existing malware. That approach can be convenient, but users who prefer visible scan results may find it less reassuring than a standard antivirus program.

Phishing protection

The Activity tab shows a running history of threats detected during your subscription, along with a recent activity log. Guardio’s harmful-site blocking is designed to reduce your exposure to phishing attacks by warning you about or blocking risky pages before you interact with them.

Guardio also aims to reduce phishing risk by blocking malicious redirects and suspicious pop-ups tied to scam activity. It won’t block every legitimate promotional pop-up from sites you already use.

Real-time protection

Guardio’s real-time protection turns on automatically and monitors for browser-based threats in the background. That protection includes warnings about suspicious attempts to change your browser environment or redirect your activity.

You can manage browser-related preferences in the settings menu, including your preferred search engine. If Guardio detects harmful browser changes or malicious extensions, it may prompt you to remove or correct them after installation.

Ransomware protection

Guardio says it helps protect against a range of online threats, including ransomware-related risks, but we didn’t find dedicated ransomware protection tools, such as file rollback or ransomware remediation features.

Guardio can lower your exposure to dangerous sites by warning you about unfamiliar or low-credibility pages before you interact with them. That kind of prevention may help reduce the chance of landing on pages that distribute malicious files or scams.

Still, Guardio doesn’t give you a dedicated ransomware dashboard or feature set, so we wouldn’t rely on it alone if ransomware protection is a top priority. Keeping all available protections enabled will help you get the most from the service.

Anti-fraud protection

Guardio doesn’t market a separate anti-fraud tool, but its anti-phishing features can still help reduce fraud risk by blocking scam pages and suspicious messages designed to steal personal or payment information.

Guardio's breach alerts can also help you respond faster if your data is exposed. If that happens, Guardio provides guidance on what to do next, which may help you limit fraud or identity theft damage.

Bonus features

Guardio doesn’t pack in as many extras as a traditional antivirus suite, but the add-on features it does offer are practical and closely tied to browser safety and identity monitoring.

Beyond real-time browser protection, Guardio includes tools like breach alerts, dark web monitoring, and notification blocking.

Guardio test results

Guardio’s performance in our in-house testing has varied over time. In this latest round, it blocked one of our three test scenarios, and we still haven’t found major third-party lab results for the product.

The lack of third-party lab coverage doesn’t automatically mean Guardio is ineffective, but it gives us fewer independent data points than we usually like when reviewing security software.

EICAR test results

In our latest testing, we pitted Guardio against the European Institute for Computer Anti-Virus Research's (EICAR) malware and phishing test files. Here's how it performed:

During testing, Windows Security initially intercepted the malware sample before Guardio could respond, so we turned it off to isolate Guardio’s behavior. In that setup, Guardio successfully blocked the manually downloaded malware test file.

However, Guardio didn't stop the drive-by malware download or the phishing test page this round. These misses reinforce that Guardio is better viewed as a browser-protection companion than a replacement for full antivirus software.

Guardio compatibility

Guardio’s browser extension experience focuses on desktop, supporting Chrome and Edge. On mobile, you can still access identity-related features through the iOS and Android apps, which are available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

Guardio offers 24/7 email support at support@guardio.io, giving users a direct way to ask billing or product questions.

When we contacted support about disabling auto-renewal, we received a reply within about a minute. The response was clear, friendly, and helpful.
